We are in Slovenia putting the final touches on our upcoming Slovenia Cycling tour of the region set for September.
As we needed to change planes, we opted to spend an extra day in Frankfurt, Germany. Frankfurt is a metropolis and the 5th largest city of Germany. We stayed at The Radisson Blu Hotel, an exceptional hotel located in a quiet neighborhood with all the amenities, which was perfect as the flight to Europe is long and we needed quality sleep.
We had an incredible day with perfectly sunny weather and moderate temperatures. We took the train to “Old Town” of Frankfurt located on the north shore of the Main River and found a pedestrian path with beautiful architectural views surrounded by people walking, cycling and enjoying the scenery. Old Town attractions include the Romer (15th to 18th-century houses), the Ostzeile (half-timbered houses) and Leonardkirke Church.
We were also on the hunt for the Gastatte Atschel, a restaurant well known for local specialties, including my favorite German fare, “Schweinshaxe (pork knuckle) and Snitzel.” Our expectations were met on every level! We sat in the Biergarten and were joined by a family from Canada on their way to France for a bicycling tour and another local cyclist. We all enjoyed our meal together laughing and sharing stories like old friends.
Next stop is Ljubljana!
Later in the evening, we arrived at the Hotel Slon in Ljubljana, Slovenia. Hoping to have a glass of wine before calling it a night, we found a “small” establishment that didn’t have much seating. A very nice lady motioned us to sit down at her table as she was “just leaving.” Two hours later, we were all still sitting there enjoying our new found friendship. Come to find out this fascinating Slovenian woman has been published in Forbes Magazine and is a well-known Entrepreneur, Philanthropist, and Business Women’s Advocate.
Wow, and it’s only been one day!
