Trip Highlights: Bavaria
Each day on our bike tour seemed like the best, filled with amazing historical sites, incredible scenery, and great food. One of my favorite days included our ride from Ettal following the mountain pass into Reutte, Austria. We cycled along the high alpine Lake Plansee, and followed the River Lech into Fussen. It was a really great day filled with spectacular scenery!
Another highlight of our trip was Salzburg. This is a great city for sightseeing because most everything is within walking distance. The Hohensalzburg Fortress, Mirabell Palace Gardens, Salzburger Dom, and St Peters monastery and cemetery dating from 696, were all on our Salzburg tour itinerary.
The last leg of our trip was in the historical yet modern city of Munich where Oktoberfest was in full swing. And, of course, we all joined in the celebration, indulging in all the traditional fare! We explored Marienplatz, the heart of old town Munich, and home to the medieval and gothic Rathaus and the Frauenkirche church. The Munich Residence was a must-see with its myriad crowns, staffs, jewelry, chandeliers, statues, and furniture, all spectacularly bejeweled with precious gems.
With the Bavarian Alps as a backdrop to so many impressive medieval castles, baroque churches and crystal clear rivers and lakes, we enjoyed every moment exploring this magical country. We now know where the term “fit for a king” came from.
